Stephen Stone: An Appreciation

Stephen Stone DMD died on November 22, 2013 at the age of 77. Dr. Stone graduated Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and from the University of Michigan. He taught at Harvard University for 40 years. Stephen practiced the Specialty of Periodontics in Norwood for 49 years and was an active member of the Massachusetts and the Metropolitan District Dental Societies. Stephen was the most active member of the MDDS Executive Committee in my 22 years of participation. With his prepared reports hand written on his lawyer’s pad of yellow lined paper, Steve spoke with passion about his favorite topics: The Allied Dental Health Committee, Volunteerism, and his lovely bride, Ellen. Stephen held many positions in MDS and MDDS:

1982-1986 District Executive Board

1994-1995 District Program Chair

1995-1996 District Peer Review Committee

1996-1997 District Chair

1997-1998 District Nominating Committee Chair

1990-present District ADHP Committee Chair

1998-1999 District Representative to the MDS Council on Nominations

2001-2013 District Representative to the MDS Council on Dental Practice

In the year 2000, Stephen was honored with the Robert L. Burke, DDS Memorial Outstanding Volunteer Award, and was its initial recipient. Stephen and the ADHP Committee’s Annual Breakfast and Learn Seminar for the Allied Dental Health Profession held every year for the past 20 years is the most attended meeting for hygienists and dental assistants in the state not including the Yankee Dental Congress. Steve founded the MDS ADHP Scholarship Stipend which was named in Dr. Stone’s honor. He also founded the DANB Stipend Award as well.

Dr. Stone’s middle name was “Volunteer” as he was district delegate to MDS House of Delegates and participant in the CHIP'S Program, District Health Fairs, District Oral Cancer Screenings, and at Bridge Over Troubled Waters in Boston. Dr. Stone also developed a dental program to help senior citizens receive proper dental care.

Outside of dentistry, Stephen was president of the Walpole Community Food Pantry, a Walpole Town Meeting member for 20 years and was voted Man of the Year in the Town of Walpole. Stephen proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis attaining the rank of Lieutenant.

From: Paula K. Friedman, DDS, Past President, Massachusetts Dental Society

“Steve was a consummate professional, a visionary, a leader and had a heart as big as the perpetual smile on his face. He was a very special friend to so many people--to those who knew him, and to many who did not know him. Dr. Stephen Stone left a legacy within his community and within his profession that will live in perpetuity.”

Stephen Stone has been greatly missed.
