Synopsis
This evidence-based course is designed to provide effective and practical strategies for managing acute dental pain emergencies. The latest information on NSAIDS, acetaminophen-containing analgesics and local anesthetics will be provided with the objective of having immediate application to your next patient emergency. Want to know how to anesthetize that hot tooth? How to predictably manage severe acute pain after surgical or endodontic treatments? How to combine common medications to improve analgesia? This course will answer these practical tips and more using a lecture style that emphasizes interactions with the audience in answering common pain problems with useful solutions.
Biography
Dr. Hargreaves is currently professor and chair of the department of endodontics, and professor in the departments of pharmacology, physiology and surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
He received his D.D.S. degree from Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Ph.D. in physiology from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md., and Certificate in Endodontics from the University of Minnesota, where he served as an associate professor of endodontics and pharmacology for seven years, and maintained a private practice limited to endodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.
He was a senior staff fellow at the Pain Clinic of the Neurobiology and Anesthesiology Branch of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research/National Institutes of Health for five years, and later served as associate professor of endodontics and pharmacology at the University of Minnesota for seven years. In 1997, he joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as professor and chair of the department of endodontics with a joint position in the departments of pharmacology, physiology and surgery.
His area of research focuses on the pharmacology of pain and inflammation. He has received the National Institutes of Health MERIT Award for pain research, two International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Awards, and the ADA Gold Medal Award for Research. He has published more than 200 articles. He co-edited Seltzer and Bender’s Dental Pulp with Drs. Harold E. Goodis and Frank Tay, and the 11th edition of Cohen’s Pathways of the Pulp with Drs. Louis Berman.
The Metropolitan District Dental Society is delighted to honor Maryam Shomali, D.M.D. with the 2020 Robert L. Burke, DDS Memorial Volunteer Award
The Burke Volunteer Award is the greatest honor bestowed to an individual member of the Metropolitan District and is presented in recognition of the outstanding efforts and contributions which have been put forth by the recipient for the betterment of the dental society, the practice of the dental arts and the entire dental community.
Dr. Shomali graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, where she received her Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree. After practicing general dentistry for one year, she entered Boston University School of Dental Medicine where she studied Endodontics under the leadership of a world renowned endodontist, Dr. Herbert Schilder. She was awarded an Advanced Graduate Studies degree in Endodontics in 1993.
For the past twenty-seven years, Dr. Shomali has been in private practice caring for patients in Wellesley and the surrounding communities. Her mission has always been to provide her patients with the highest quality endodontic treatment while easing their anxiety in a friendly and compassionate atmosphere.
Dr. Shomali has consistently volunteered at the Metropolitan District’s “Give Kids a Smile” and “Masks4Members” programs, and is a participant in the Massachusetts Dental Society Mentor Program, in which she assists new dentists to become professional partners. Dr. Shomali has served as the president of the Charles River Study Club and chaired the Metropolitan District Dental Society. Dr. Shomali has been a valuable member of the Metropolitan District’s Social Event Planning Committee and the ultimate leader as the chair of the Continuing Education Committee. She is also the present Treasurer of the Metropolitan District.
Dr. Shomali is always available to the district for valuable advice and guidance. The Metropolitan District Dental Society is truly appreciative of all the time and effort she has shown as a volunteer and mentor in the past and looks forward to her continued strength in the coming years.
